What is the appropriate embossing height? Balancing 3D effects and fabric protection.

There's no universal standard for the appropriate height, but the industry generally adheres to the principle of "achieving a clear, three-dimensional effect within the fabric's tolerance." The typical range is 0.3-2mm, subject to adjustment based on the following factors:

Fabric type is the key consideration.

Thin/loose fabrics (such as silk, chiffon, and muslin): 0.3-0.8mm is suitable. These fabrics have poor stretch resistance and are easily damaged by excessive embossing height. A lower embossing height ensures clear patterns and maintains the fabric's integrity.

Medium-thick fabrics (such as cotton and linen, ordinary knits, and PU leather): 0.8-1.5mm is suitable. These fabrics have a certain degree of toughness and can withstand moderate deformation, creating a distinct three-dimensional effect without damage.

Thick/high-strength fabrics (such as canvas, leather, and wool): 1.2-2mm is suitable. These dense and resilient fabrics can withstand higher embossing heights, resulting in a more pronounced 3D effect (this range is often used for embossing on leather bags, for example). The complexity of the pattern should be balanced.

Fine patterns (such as lines, small letters, and florals): The recommended height is ≤1mm. A height higher than 1mm will blur details (thick lines and distorted letters).

Simple, large patterns (such as geometric shapes and brand logos): The height can be increased to 1-2mm to create a more intuitive three-dimensional effect without distortion.

The upper limit is determined by the application scenario.

Underwear fabrics (lingerie, T-shirts): The recommended height is ≤1mm to avoid rubbing and discomfort.

Decorative fabrics (curtains, sofa covers): The recommended height is 1-2mm, prioritizing visual appeal.

Highly used fabrics (backpacks, gloves): The recommended height is ≤1.5mm to reduce wear and tear and the risk of snagging.
