Core Requirements for GOTS Certification (Three Dimensions)
The GOTS standard sets strict thresholds across three dimensions: environmental protection, social responsibility, and product quality. Failure to meet any of these requirements will result in certification.
1. Environmental Protection Requirements (Critical)
Raw Materials: Organic fibers must comply with international organic farming standards (such as EU Organic Regulation EC 834/2007 and US NOP). The use of genetically modified seeds, synthetic pesticides/fertilizers, and hormones (for animal fibers such as wool) is prohibited.
Processing:
Toxic and hazardous chemicals such as azo dyes, formaldehyde, heavy metals (lead, mercury, etc.), chlorine-containing bleaches, and phthalates are prohibited.
Restricted Additives: Detergents, softeners, etc. must meet "low toxicity and readily biodegradable" requirements, with natural-sourced additives (such as plant extracts) being preferred.
Wastewater/Exhaust Gas Treatment: Wastewater generated during the production process must be treated to meet standards before discharge, and exhaust gas emissions must control VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions. Packaging: Recyclable or biodegradable materials (such as plastic-free packaging or recycled paper packaging) must be used. Packaging containing harmful coatings such as fluoride is prohibited.
2. Social Responsibility Requirements (Mandatory)
GOTS explicitly requires certified companies to protect workers' rights and comply with the core conventions of the International Labor Organization (ILO). These requirements include:
Prohibiting child labor (the minimum working age is at least 15 years old, and some countries may extend this to 14 years old) and forced labor.
Guaranteeing reasonable wages (no less than the local statutory minimum wage or the industry average wage) and normal working hours (no more than 48 hours per week, and overtime must be voluntary and paid).
Providing a safe working environment (fire prevention, explosion prevention, adequate ventilation, and necessary labor protection equipment). Discrimination (based on gender, race, religion, etc.) is prohibited.
Workers are allowed to form unions and the right to collective bargaining is guaranteed.
3. Product Quality and Labeling Requirements
Organic Fiber Content: GOTS certification is divided into two levels, each with different requirements for the percentage of organic fiber:
