How can digital printing and silicone printing be combined together
1. Material compatibility
Substrate selection: It is necessary to ensure that both digital printing ink and silicone slurry can adhere to the same substrate (such as polyester fabric, PVC leather, etc.). For example:
When digital printing uses water-based ink, the substrate needs to have good water absorption; after the silicone slurry is cured, it needs to be tightly combined with the substrate to avoid stratification.
Chemical reaction between ink and silicone: Some inks (such as solvent-based inks) may react with the curing agent in the silicone slurry, resulting in blurred patterns or failure of silicone to cure. It is necessary to test compatibility in advance, select inert inks or adjust the silicone formula.
2. Process sequence design
Digital printing first, then silicone printing (recommended):
After digital printing is completed, dry or cure the ink first (such as active inks that need to be evaporated for color fixation).
Then apply silicone slurry through screen printing or coating process, and finally cure at high temperature (usually above 150°C, depending on the type of silicone).
Advantages: Avoid silicone slurry covering digital printing details, and the silicone curing temperature may not affect the cured ink.
Silicone printing first, digital printing later (only applicable in certain scenarios):
It is necessary to ensure that the digital printing ink can adhere to the silicone surface (such as roughening the silicone surface or using an adhesion promoter), but this may cause the pattern clarity to decrease, so it is rarely used.
3. Pattern design limitations
Limitations of silicone printing: It is suitable for simple geometric figures, text, lines or small blocks, and it is difficult to achieve the fine gradient or complex images of digital printing. Therefore, it is recommended to combine:
Digital printing is responsible for the background or main pattern, and silicone printing is used for outlines, borders, and local three-dimensional embellishments (such as three-dimensional embossing of brand LOGO on clothing).
Avoid silicone covering the key detail areas of digital printing.
