Composition and structural characteristics of self-lubricating silicone

Silicone matrix:
Its main component is still silicone rubber, which is a highly elastic polymer with a silicon-oxygen (Si-O) bond as the main chain. This main chain structure makes silicone have good high and low temperature resistance, chemical corrosion resistance and excellent elasticity. For example, methyl vinyl silicone rubber is a commonly used silicone matrix material. The vinyl in its molecular chain can be used for vulcanization reaction to form a three-dimensional network structure, giving silicone good physical properties.

Lubricant ingredients:
Self-lubricating silicone is added with lubricant ingredients such as silicone oil, fatty acid esters, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) powder, etc. Silicone oil is one of the most common lubricants and has good compatibility with the silicone matrix. Silicone oil molecules can be evenly distributed inside the silicone, and when the silicone is subjected to pressure or friction, they can gradually seep out to the surface to form a lubricating film. PTFE powder can enhance the wear resistance of silicone, and its particles play a role similar to balls on the surface of silicone to reduce the friction coefficient.

Additives and fillers:
In addition to lubricants, other additives and fillers may also be contained. For example, adding antioxidants can improve the antioxidant properties of silicone and prevent silicone from aging due to oxidation during use. Fillers such as fumed silica can enhance the strength and hardness of silicone, improve its mechanical properties, and also help improve the wear resistance of silicone.
