Which one is more advantageous for making gaskets and seals, solid silicone or liquid silicone?
1. Advantages of solid silicone
Lower cost, more cost-effective
The price of solid silicone raw materials is lower than that of liquid silicone, and the initial investment in compression molding equipment (such as flat vulcanizer) is less, which is suitable for cost-sensitive and medium-volume scenarios (such as ordinary industrial gaskets, household seals).
Better tear resistance and mechanical strength
After mixing, solid silicone has a tighter molecular structure, and its tear resistance and tensile strength (generally up to 6-10MPa) are better than liquid silicone. It is more durable in scenarios that need to withstand friction and extrusion (such as pipe flange gaskets, valve seals).
Wider temperature resistance range (some models)
The temperature resistance range of ordinary solid silicone is - 60℃~200℃, and special models (such as fluorosilicone) can withstand high temperatures above 300℃, which is suitable for high temperature conditions (such as oven seals, car engine gaskets).
Suitable for large-sized and complex-shaped products
Compression molding has fewer restrictions on product size. It can produce large gaskets with a diameter of more than 1 meter, or complex structure seals with grooves and bosses, and the edges are not prone to burrs.
2. Advantages of liquid silicone
Higher precision and stronger sealing
Liquid silicone has good fluidity and can completely fill mold details (such as tiny gaps and precision slots). The dimensional tolerance after molding can be controlled at ±0.01mm, which is suitable for scenes with extremely high requirements for sealing (such as medical equipment seals and electronic component waterproof gaskets).
Higher purity and no volatiles
Liquid silicone does not require the addition of additives other than vulcanizers (solid silicone may contain fillers). There are no small molecule volatiles after molding. It meets food grade (FDA) and medical grade (USP Class VI) standards and is suitable for gaskets in contact with food and medicine (such as baby bottle seals and infusion set gaskets).
Better low temperature resistance and flexibility
Liquid silicone can still maintain flexibility at low temperatures (below -80°C) and is not easy to harden and crack. It is suitable for sealing rings of cold chain equipment and low-temperature pipelines (such as refrigerator compressor gaskets).
Better production stability
Injection molding has a high degree of automation, which can avoid performance fluctuations of solid silicone caused by uneven manual mixing, and is suitable for scenarios with high requirements for product consistency (such as automotive sealing system gaskets).
