What is the difference between injection molding silicone and casting silicone in terms of performance?
Mechanical properties
Injection molding silicone: usually has high strength, hardness and wear resistance, can withstand the high pressure during the injection molding process and the external force and friction of the product during use. For example, the injection molding silicone used to make mobile phone buttons needs to have a certain hardness and good resilience to ensure the touch and service life of the buttons.
Casting silicone: generally has good flexibility and elasticity, but its strength and hardness may be lower than injection molding silicone, which makes it better adapted to the requirements of mold flexibility in the casting process, and is not easy to damage the casting during demolding. For example, when casting some fine crafts, the casting silicone mold needs to have good elasticity to completely remove the casting.
Curing characteristics
Injection molding silicone: During the injection molding process, it needs to be quickly injected into the mold cavity under high temperature and high pressure, and cured in a short time to achieve efficient mass production. Its curing speed is fast, and it can generally be cured within a few minutes.
Casting silicone: Casting silicone takes a relatively long time to cure, usually taking several hours or even longer to fully cure. For example, when making a silicone mold, it may take 10-15 hours or even longer from mixing silicone to fully curing the mold. This is to ensure that the silicone can fully fill the various details of the mold and have enough time for operation.
Fluidity and filling properties
Injection molding silicone: It needs to have good fluidity during injection molding so that it can quickly fill the complex shape of the mold under high pressure to form a high-precision product, but after curing, its shape is relatively fixed and not easy to adjust.
Casting silicone: It also has good fluidity in liquid state, which can wrap the model well and reproduce fine details. However, compared with injection molding silicone, casting silicone has a relatively long operation time before curing, allowing more time for manual operations, such as brushing and pouring.
