Here are the primary materials used for making screen printing mesh, from most common to specialized:

1. Polyester (Most Common)

This is the industry standard for the vast majority of screen printing applications.

Properties: High tensile strength, excellent dimensional stability (doesn't stretch easily), high resistance to chemicals (solvents, water-based inks, emulsion), and good abrasion resistance.

Why it's used: Its stability ensures that the image on the screen doesn't distort during the printing process. It can withstand the high tension required for accurate printing and is durable enough for long print runs.

Best for: Printing on textiles (tshirts, garments), posters, signage, labels, and most plastic substrates. It is suitable for both water-based and plastisol inks.

2. Nylon

Nylon was historically more common but has been largely replaced by polyester for general use. It is still valuable for specific applications.

Properties: High elasticity and flexibility, very high abrasion resistance, good chemical resistance (though slightly less than polyester to certain solvents).

Why it's used: Its exceptional elasticity makes it ideal for printing on irregular or contoured surfaces (like bottles, glasses, or curved toys) because the screen can conform to the shape without breaking.

Best for: Printing on three-dimensional, rounded, or uneven objects. Note: Nylon is not recommended for long runs on flat surfaces because its stretch can lead to registration issues.

3. Stainless Steel

A specialized material used for extremely demanding industrial applications.

Properties: Exceptional durability and abrasion resistance, zero stretch (perfect dimensional stability), can withstand very high tensions, and is resistant to almost all chemicals.

Why it's used: For extremely long, high-abrasion print runs (e.g., printing ceramic decals, printed electronics, circuit boards, or thousands of identical items). It can also be used for very fine detail and high ink deposition.

Drawbacks: Very expensive, susceptible to kinking and permanent damage if mishandled, and much heavier than synthetic meshes.

Historical & Niche Materials:

Silk: The original material from which screen printing gets its name ("silkscreening"). It is rarely used today except by artists seeking a specific, traditional aesthetic or feel. It is organic, less consistent, and has poor resistance to moisture and stretching compared to modern synthetics.
