Screen Cleaning: Essential Steps for Ensuring Printing Quality and Screen Longevity

Cleaning screens is a critical step in ensuring print quality and extending the life of screens. Here are some professional and effective cleaning methods:

1. Preparation

Tools and Materials: Prepare tools such as a scraper, soft brush, cleaning agents (specifically formulated screen cleaning agents like screen wash, also known as thinner or 407 solvent; or alternatives like alcohol or other organic solvents), a water source, and a clean cloth or sponge. Ensure all tools are clean to prevent secondary contamination.

2. Cleaning Steps

Initial Scraping: Use a scraper to gently remove large ink deposits and debris from the screen. Be mindful of the pressure applied to avoid damaging the screen.

Soak Cleaning: Soak the screen in the cleaning agent for a period of time to soften and remove ink and residues adhered to the screen. The soaking time varies based on the type and adherence of ink, usually ranging from a few to several minutes. For cured liquid silicone on the screen, soak in screen wash for a few hours to make the cured silicone removable.

Brushing the Screen: Use a soft brush to gently scrub the ink and debris from the screen, paying special attention to the mesh openings. Maintain moderate pressure while brushing to avoid damaging the screen.

Rinsing the Screen: Rinse the screen with clean water to remove any remaining cleaning agents and ink. Ensure thorough rinsing to avoid residual cleaning agent affecting subsequent prints.

3. Precautions

Safety Measures: Wear gloves, safety glasses, and other protective gear during the cleaning process to avoid contact with cleaning agents. Since some cleaning agents (like thinner) are flammable and explosive, work away from fire sources and in a well-ventilated area.

Avoid Screen Damage: Take care to protect the screen during cleaning, avoiding hard or sharp tools that could scratch the screen surface or damage the mesh.

Drying and Storage: Place the cleaned screen in a clean environment to air dry naturally, avoiding direct sunlight and high-temperature baking. After drying, store the screen properly to prevent contamination from dust and debris.

4. Alternative Cleaning Methods

In addition to the manual cleaning methods described above, an automatic spray-type screen cleaning machine can also be used. This machine can automatically complete the cleaning, rinsing, and drying steps, improving cleaning efficiency and quality.

In summary, cleaning screens used for liquid silicone printing requires following certain steps and precautions. Using the correct cleaning methods and tools ensures screen cleanliness and longevity, thus improving printing quality and efficiency.
