                                                  Disadvantages and limitations of silicone in mold making

As a widely used mold material, silicone is favored for its unique flexibility and temperature resistance. However, just as any material has its limitations, silicone also has some disadvantages and limitations in the mold making process.

1. Hardness and strength limitations
The hardness and strength of silicone molds are relatively limited, which limits its application range to a certain extent. Compared with metal or hard plastic molds, silicone molds may be more easily deformed or damaged when subjected to greater pressure or heavy loads. Therefore, silicone may not be the best choice in mold applications that require high precision and strong load-bearing capacity.

2. Insufficient wear resistance
The wear resistance of silicone molds is relatively poor, and long-term use or frequent friction may cause surface wear, which in turn affects the precision and life of the mold. Especially in applications where frequent demolding is required or the mold surface is in direct contact with the product, the wear resistance of silicone molds may become a limiting factor.

3. Limited chemical corrosion resistance
Although silicone has good chemical stability under general conditions, it may be corroded in certain corrosive environments such as strong acids, strong alkalis or organic solvents, resulting in performance degradation or failure. Therefore, silicone molds need to be selected carefully in applications involving corrosive substances.

4. Higher cost
Compared with some traditional mold materials, silicone molds may be more expensive. This is mainly because the preparation process of silicone materials is relatively complicated, and silicone molds usually need to be customized to meet the needs of different products. Therefore, silicone molds may not be the most economical choice in cost-sensitive applications.

5. Demolding difficulty
Although silicone molds have good flexibility and elasticity, the demolding process may still be challenging in some cases. Especially when the mold shape is complex or the product material is viscous, demolding may require extra effort or skills to ensure that the product is completely removed from the mold.

6. Heat resistance limitation
Although silicone has temperature resistance, its heat resistance still has certain limitations. In a high temperature environment, silicone may soften or deform, which affects the precision and stability of the mold. Therefore, in applications that need to withstand high temperatures, it is necessary to select silicone materials with higher heat resistance or consider other mold materials.
