Core Technical Requirements for Automotive-Grade Textile Silicone
The performance requirements for textile silicone in automotive applications are far higher than those for ordinary consumer products, and must focus on meeting the following criteria:
Environmental Compliance
Must pass the automotive industry's stringent environmental certifications, such as:
VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds): Comply with standards such as VDA 277 (Germany) and GB/T 27630 (China), limiting the release of harmful substances such as formaldehyde and benzene;
Odor Level: Tested according to VDA 270, the odor must be ≤ Level 3 (virtually odorless) to prevent in-car odors from affecting the driving experience;
Prohibited Substances: Comply with the ELV Directive (EU), and do not contain heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and mercury, as well as plasticizers such as phthalates. Weather Resistance and Durability
Automotive operating environments are complex (high and low temperatures, UV rays, oil, and vibration), requiring the following:
High and low temperature resistance: Long-term resistance from -40°C (no cracking at low temperatures) to 180°C (no softening at high temperatures); some engine compartment components must withstand temperatures exceeding 200°C;
Aging resistance: UV resistance (no noticeable discoloration or cracking after xenon lamp testing for ≥1000 hours) and ozone resistance (to prevent seal aging and failure);
Chemical resistance: Withstands gasoline, engine oil, antifreeze, detergents, and other chemicals without swelling or delamination.
Safety Performance
Flame retardancy: Most components must meet UL 94 V-0 (self-extinguishing within 30 seconds of vertical combustion, no ignitable droplets), especially electrical components, seats, and interior fabrics;
Mechanical strength: Adhesion (cross-cut test ≥4B), tear strength (≥20 kN/m), and abrasion resistance must meet the demands of long-term use to prevent coating detachment and fabric damage.
