Can silicone and PU materials be bonded?
Silicone and PU (polyurethane) materials can be bonded, but because these two materials have low surface energy and low polarity, they are difficult to bond, so it is necessary to choose the right method and adhesive to achieve a good bonding effect. The following are some common bonding methods:
Use special silicone and PU adhesives: There are some adhesives on the market that are specially designed for bonding silicone and PU materials, such as silicone treatment agent with instant glue (such as cyanoacrylate glue), silicone structural glue, etc. First, evenly apply silicone treatment agent on the surface of silicone to make it react chemically with the surface of silicone, improve the surface activity of silicone, and enhance the bonding strength with adhesive; after the treatment agent dries, apply instant glue or silicone structural glue on the bonding surface of silicone and PU materials, and then quickly fit the two together, and apply a certain amount of pressure, and keep it for a period of time until the adhesive solidifies.
Hot vulcanization bonding: If it is uncured silicone and PU materials, hot vulcanization bonding can be used. Place the silicone and PU materials together, and vulcanize the silicone by heating and pressurizing, and at the same time form a strong bond between the silicone and PU materials. This method requires professional molds and vulcanization equipment and is suitable for mass production.
Bonding after surface treatment: Physical or chemical treatment is performed on the surface of the silicone and PU materials to increase the surface roughness and activity and improve the bonding effect. For example, the surface of the silicone is polished or sandblasted to make it rough; or plasma treatment, corona treatment and other methods are used to generate active groups such as free radicals on the surface of the silicone and PU materials to enhance the reactivity with the adhesive. Then use a suitable adhesive for bonding.
Primer-assisted bonding: Primers are applied to the surfaces of the silicone and PU materials respectively. The primers can react with the surface of the materials to form a transition layer, thereby improving the adhesion between the adhesive and the materials. After the primer is dry, apply the adhesive for bonding.
