How to synthesize silcone rubber

The synthesis of silcone is mainly based on the chemical transformation process of silicon dioxide (SiO2). The following are the main steps of silicone rubber synthesis:

1. Raw material preparation
The synthesis of silica gel usually starts with quartz (SiO2) or other silicon-containing minerals. In industry, these raw materials undergo pre-treatment steps such as crushing and grinding to obtain a particle size suitable for further reactions.

2. Alkali treatment
Dissolution: First, a strong alkaline solution (such as NaOH solution) is used to dissolve quartz. In this step, quartz reacts with hydroxide ions (OH-) to produce sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) solution, also known as water glass.

3. Acidification
Acidification: Next, the sodium silicate solution is reacted with an acid (such as dilute sulfuric acid H2SO4 or hydrochloric acid HCl) to acidify the sodium silicate and produce silicic acid (H2SiO3) gel. This step is the key to silica gel synthesis. By controlling the acidification conditions, the structure and properties of the silicic acid gel can be adjusted.

4. Aging and drying
Aging: The generated silicic acid gel needs to be left to stand for a period of time for aging treatment to enhance its stability and structural strength.
Washing: After aging, the silica gel is washed with hot water to remove soluble salts and other impurities.
Drying: Subsequently, the silica gel is dried at 60-70°C to remove moisture and obtain a preliminary silica gel product.
Activation: In order to further improve the adsorption performance and stability of silica gel, activation treatment is usually carried out at a higher temperature (about 300°C).

5. Special treatment (such as color-changing silica gel)
When preparing color-changing silica gel, cobalt chloride (CoCl2) or other metal salts are added to the silica gel. These salts change color when they can absorb and release moisture in the silica gel, thereby indicating changes in humidity in the environment.
